J-B Weld is The Original Cold Weld two-part epoxy system that provides strong, lasting repairs to metal and multiple surfaces. Mixed at a ratio of 1:1, it forms a permanent bond and can be shaped, tapped, filed, sanded and drilled after curing. At room temperature, J-B Weld sets in 4-6 hours to a dark grey color. A full cure is reached in 15-24 hours. J-B Weld has a tensile strength of 6220 PSI and sets to a hard bond overnight. It can withstand temperatures up to 550°F when fully cured.

How to Use

Prepare

Clean surface area of dirt, grease, oil, paint, or loose debris. For best results use a detergent or degreaser to first clean the surface, then roughen surface with file or coarse sandpaper to provide the best repair.

Mix

Squeeze equal parts from each tube onto a disposable surface and mix thoroughly.

Apply

Apply with appropriate tool in an even coat, weld bead or extruded shape as needed.

Dry

Sets in 4-6 hours. Cures in 15-24 hours. Allow 4-6 hours before handling and 15 hours (minimum) before putting object back in use.

What materials does J-B Weld Original bond to?

It bonds metal, aluminum, cast iron, ceramic, wood, concrete, brick, fiberglass, and rigid plastics including PVC. Sand the surface dull and rough, then clean it with acetone before you apply it. It does not bond well to polyethylene, polypropylene, HDPE, flexible plastics, or rubber. Use PlasticBonder (50139) for plastics that resist it, and a cyanoacrylate super glue for rubber.

How long does J-B Weld Original take to set and cure?

It sets in 4 to 6 hours and reaches full cure in 15 to 24 hours. Leave the parts undisturbed for the entire cure. For engine, gear, or load-bearing repairs, allow a full 24 to 30 hours before you machine, sand, or return the part to service. It sets and cures between 32F and 120F, and warmer temperatures cure it faster.

How much heat can J-B Weld Original withstand?

Once fully cured it withstands temperatures up to 550F. That covers most engine block, radiator, and coolant passage repairs. It is not suitable for exhaust manifolds, mufflers, or headers, where it will smoke and break down; use J-B Weld ExtremeHeat for those. The temperature rating applies only after a complete 15 to 24 hour cure.

Is J-B Weld Original resistant to fuel, oil, and coolant?

Yes. After a full 24-hour cure it resists most shop fluids, including motor oil, diesel, and engine coolant. The repair area must be completely clean and dry during application and the entire cure or the bond will fail. Ethanol-blended gasoline is the exception: long-term contact, especially combined with vibration, can make the repair let go over time.

Is J-B Weld Original safe for food, cookware, or drinking water?

No. J-B Weld Original is considered non-toxic once fully cured, but it is not rated food-safe and is not certified for potable water. Do not use it on cookware, dishes, drinking containers, or the inside of a water tank. For a drinking water repair, use J-B Weld WaterWeld (8277), which is NSF certified.

How should I prepare the surface and how thick should the epoxy layer be?

Sand both surfaces dull and rough, then clean with acetone and let them dry. For a bonded joint, aim for a 1/8 to 3/16 inch layer and hold the parts with tape or light contact rather than heavy clamping, which squeezes out too much epoxy. After a full cure you can sand, file, drill, tap, and paint it with enamel or latex. It is not UV resistant and will discolor in sunlight.

Can I paint over J-B Weld Original once it has cured?

Yes. Once fully cured, J-B Weld Original can be painted with enamel or latex paints, so your repair can blend in with the surrounding surface.

What kind of paint works on J-B Weld Original?

Enamel and latex paints both work well over cured J-B Weld Original. Make sure the repair has reached full cure before you paint.

How do I keep J-B Weld Original from sticking to areas I don't want it to bond to?

Apply a release agent to those areas before you start. Candle wax or Gulf Wax works well, as does a very thin coat of petroleum jelly. J-B Weld Original won't adhere where the release agent is applied.
