J-B Weld MarineWeld is a specially formulated two-part epoxy cold weld system for strong, lasting repairs to alike or different surfaces, including aluminum, metal, composites, fiberglass, and more. It sets in 4-6 hours at room temperature to a dark grey color and fully cures in 15-24 hours. Once cured, it forms a permanent bond that can be shaped, tapped, filed, sanded, and drilled, maintaining its strength above or below water. MarineWeld has a 1:1 mixing ratio and a tensile strength of 5020 PSI.

How to Use

Prepare

Clean surface area of dirt, grease, oil, paint, or loose debris. For best results use a detergent or degreaser to first clean the surface, then roughen surface with file or coarse sandpaper to provide the best repair.

Mix

Squeeze equal parts from each tube onto a disposable surface and mix thoroughly.

Apply

Apply with appropriate tool in an even coat, weld bead or extruded shape as needed.

Dry

Sets in 4-6 hours. Cures in 15-24 hours. Allow 4-6 hours before handling and 15 hours (minimum) before putting object back in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can MarineWeld be used underwater or below the waterline?

Yes, MarineWeld holds above or below the water's surface once it has cured. Apply it to a dry, sanded, acetone-cleaned surface and let it cure out of the water; it is not made to be applied underwater. Allow the full 15 to 24 hours before the repair is submerged or put back into service.

What materials does MarineWeld bond to?

MarineWeld bonds aluminum, steel, cast iron, brass, fiberglass, wood, ABS, PVC, and other rigid plastics and composites. Sand the surface dull and rough and clean it with acetone before applying. It will not bond polyethylene or polypropylene, which rules out most plastic kayaks and plastic fuel tanks, and it does not adhere well to rubber or Hypalon.

How long does MarineWeld take to set and cure?

MarineWeld sets in 4 to 6 hours and cures fully in 15 to 24 hours at room temperature, mixed 1:1. Cold weather and high humidity lengthen the cure, so allow extra time or apply gentle heat when working below about 50F. Keep the parts taped or supported and undisturbed until the cure is complete.

Is MarineWeld resistant to fuel and oil?

MarineWeld is oil resistant and holds up in diesel, including permanent immersion. It is fuel resistant but not gasoline-proof, and alcohol or ethanol-blended fuel will degrade it over time. The surface must be completely free of oil or fuel during application and for the entire cure, or the bond will fail. It is not a fix for a leaking fuel tank.

Does MarineWeld cure white, and can it repair gelcoat?

The 8272 twin tube cures dark gray, not white. The MarineWeld syringe (50172) is the version that cures white if color matters for your repair. J-B Weld does not offer a gelcoat repair product, so for chips and gouges in gelcoat use a dedicated fiberglass and gelcoat repair kit instead.

Is MarineWeld approved for drinking water tanks?

No. MarineWeld does not carry an NSF 61 rating and is not certified for potable water, and no J-B Weld product is rated food-safe. For a drinking water repair, use J-B Weld WaterWeld (8277), which is NSF certified. MarineWeld is intended for hulls, transoms, fittings, and other structures that do not carry drinking water.
