Frequently Asked Questions

How hot can MufflerSeal Muffler Cement get?

MufflerSeal is heat resistant up to 850 F once fully cured. It sets in 2 to 4 hours and reaches full cure in 24 hours. It is designed to seal leaks at seams, gaps and pipe connection points on an exhaust system rather than to take the direct heat of a manifold or turbo, where copper RTV silicone or ExtremeHeat is a better fit.

My MufflerSeal washed away in the rain. Does it need heat to cure?

Yes. MufflerSeal is water based and only becomes water resistant after it has been heat cured. Let it air set first, then run the engine at idle for about five minutes to finish the cure. Until that happens, rain or road spray will wash the repair off. If this happened to you, clean the area, reapply and complete the heat cure.

Is MufflerSeal an adhesive or a sealer?

It is a sealer and filler, not an adhesive. MufflerSeal fills and seals seams, gaps and joints in exhaust pipe; it will not bond two parts together or carry a load, so it is not right for broken brackets or grill legs. For a rusted, leaking muffler seam that you may want to open again, copper RTV silicone is often the better choice.

Can MufflerSeal be sanded or painted, and does it stick to aluminum?

Yes to all three. Cured MufflerSeal can be sanded and painted if you want a cleaner finish, and it adheres to aluminum as well as steel. Make sure the repair is fully cured, including the heat cure, before you sand it; working a soft repair will pull it off the pipe.

How do I remove cured MufflerSeal?

Mechanically. A flapper disc on a drill or grinder is the most effective way to take cured MufflerSeal off a pipe, and there is no solvent that removes it cleanly. If you expect to take the joint apart again later, use copper RTV silicone such as Ultimate Copper (32325) instead, which seals under clamp load and stays removable.
