How to Use

Prepare

Clean all threads (bolt and hole) with a cleaning solvent. Shake the product thoroughly before use.

Apply

For thru holes, apply several drops of product onto the bolt at the nut engagement area.

Assemble

Assemble and tighten as usual. When tightening to established torque values, torque compensation is not required.

What is the difference between Perma-Lock Red and Perma-Lock Blue?

Red is the high-strength, effectively permanent grade for fasteners that must resist severe shock and vibration, and heat plus hand tools are required to separate the parts afterward. Blue 24206 is medium strength and comes apart with hand tools alone. Choose red for fasteners you do not plan to service, such as larger studs and bolts, and blue for anything you expect to remove again.

Do I need heat to remove a bolt locked with Perma-Lock Red?

Yes. J-B Weld states that heating and hand tools are required to separate parts assembled with the red high-strength grade. Apply localized heat to the fastener and the surrounding joint with a torch or heat gun, then break it loose while it is still warm. J-B Weld does not publish a specific removal temperature, so work up gradually and protect nearby seals and wiring.

How long does Perma-Lock Red take to cure before the fastener can be used?

Allow roughly one hour to reach handling strength on a clean, dry steel fastener. J-B Weld's published data for the larger Perma-Lock bottles lists full cure at up to 24 hours, so for a high-load or safety-critical joint leave it overnight before putting it into service. Cure slows on plated, stainless, or cold parts, so allow extra time in those conditions. For a fastener carrying real load, go by the published 15 to 24 hour figure rather than the one-hour handling-strength guidance, and leave it overnight.

Why is the threadlocker I can see still wet, and why does it not cure in the bottle?

Threadlocker is anaerobic: it only hardens where air is excluded, which is inside the thread engagement between the fastener and the hole. Anything that squeezes out at the edges stays liquid and red indefinitely, and that is normal. The bottle is deliberately only part full so the product stays in contact with air and remains liquid on the shelf. Wipe away the excess.

Does Perma-Lock Red work on oily, plated, or stainless fasteners?

Threads must be clean and dry. Oil, grease, and anti-seize keep the product from curing, so degrease both the bolt and the hole with brake cleaner or acetone and let them dry before you apply several drops. It works on metal fasteners only; plastic and coated screws will not hold because the product needs metal contact to cure. Fuel contact is not recommended.
