Frequently Asked Questions

What can TankWeld repair, and how large can the damage be?

Cracks of 4 inches or less and holes up to 1/4 inch in diameter, on metal fuel tanks, metal storage tanks, oil pans and similar metal containers. This is a metal kit. It is not recommended for plastic repairs, and specifically not for polyethylene or polypropylene tanks. J-B Weld currently has nothing that lasts on a plastic fuel tank.

Is this a permanent repair on a fuel tank?

J-B Weld rates it for permanent or temporary repairs within those size limits, and the cured epoxy is fuel and oil resistant. Be realistic about your own job: a small seam weep on a clean, flat, rigid surface can hold indefinitely, while a larger hole in a tank that flexes or takes road impact should be treated as temporary until the tank is replaced or professionally repaired.

I drilled a hole in my aluminum boat tank. Will this fix it?

For a drilled hole on a flat surface, our support team suggests fitting a snug screw with a Viton O-ring under the head, tightened against the tank, and then covering the whole thing with the TankWeld kit. The screw carries the seal and the epoxy patch backs it up. Drain and vent the tank completely before you start.

What do I have to do before applying it?

Drain and vent the tank, and make sure there is no fuel, vapor or pressure at the repair area. Sand several inches around the damage down to bare metal, then clean with a solvent such as brake cleaner and let it dry fully. The epoxy will not bond over paint, rust, fuel film or a damp surface, and surface prep is where most failed repairs start.

Can I sand and paint the finished repair?

Not well. The resin in this kit cures with fiberglass cloth in it, so it does not sand smooth and it does not take paint well. If you need a repair you can sand, drill, tap and paint, use SteelStik (8267), J-B Weld Original (8265) or TankWeld epoxy putty (8217) instead, all of which finish much better.

How is the kit different from J-B Weld Original?

They are different formulas. The kit's resin is designed to work with the fiberglass cloth, which carries the repair across the damage and gives the epoxy something to hold. J-B Weld Original is a standalone steel reinforced epoxy with no cloth. Original handles some of the same repairs and finishes better, but it has no reinforcement for spanning a hole.
