Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does MinuteWeld set and cure?

MinuteWeld sets in about 1 minute and cures in 1 hour, with a tensile strength of 2300 PSI. It dries clear. Have everything dry-fit and ready before you mix, because there is almost no working time. Below 40 degrees F the set time gets noticeably longer, so warm the parts or work indoors when you can.

What temperature can MinuteWeld handle once cured?

Support rates MinuteWeld to about 200 degrees F after a full cure. An earlier support reply quoted 250 degrees F, so treat 200 as the conservative figure. Either way it is one of the lower-temperature products in the line, so keep it away from ovens and engine bays. The Original J-B Weld syringe is rated to 550 degrees F.

Can MinuteWeld be sanded or painted?

It can be painted once fully cured, but it does not sand well. Sandpaper tends to gum up on it. A high-speed rotary bit such as a Dremel shapes it much more cleanly. If you need a repair you will shape and finish by hand, the Original J-B Weld syringe or PlasticWeld sand far more easily.

Is MinuteWeld flexible, and will it survive vibration?

MinuteWeld cures rigid, not flexible. It handles steady vibration well once fully cured, provided the surfaces were sanded and cleaned properly before application. It is not a good choice for parts that flex, bend or inflate, such as vinyl air mattresses or flexible boots. ClearWeld has slightly more give if you need some flexibility.

Will MinuteWeld resist gasoline or engine oil?

No. MinuteWeld will not hold up to gasoline, including a splash across a carburetor, and it is not the right product for an engine oil leak. For fuel exposure, use the Original J-B Weld formula and allow a full 24 hours to cure. For oil leaks and gasket surfaces, a black RTV silicone is the better choice.

What surfaces does MinuteWeld work on?

MinuteWeld works on ceramic, tile, glass, stone, most hard plastics, wood and metal. Treat it as a fast general-purpose fix rather than a structural adhesive. For load-bearing metal joints such as a cast aluminum fan arm, a golf club head, or cast iron, the Original J-B Weld formula is far stronger. Sand and clean with acetone before applying.

How should I store my syringe between uses?

Store the syringe nose-up rather than lying on its side. Keeping it upright helps prevent the tips from becoming contaminated, so the product stays ready for your next repair.
