Product Details

J-B Weld Wood Restore Premium Epoxy Putty Kit is a hand mixable epoxy putty specially formulated to repair and rebuild wood quickly and easily. When applied it adds structural strength to areas of damaged or rotted wood. It can be used to fill, build, reinforce or bond wood surfaces. After mixing, it forms a polymer compound that cures to the same density as wood. It may be used for exterior or interior applications; contains no solvents; will not rot, shrink, crack or pull away. After 60 minutes, it can be sanded, tapped, machined, dripped, filed and painted.

How to Use

Prepare

Before applying, remove loose and rotted wood. We recommend that you seal and solidify the rotted wood surfaces with J-B Weld's Wood Restore Liquid Hardener or Premium Liquid Epoxy and then follow these easy steps.

Mix

With provided gloves on, scoop out equal amounts of the required amount of the Part A and Part B Premium Epoxy Putty. Mix ratio is 1:1. Mix thoroughly by kneading with the spreader or gloved fingers until a uniform color appears.

Apply

Apply to surface to be filled or repaired. Press in the material firmly, sculpturing and contouring to the desired surface appearance.

Cure

Allow to cure. Finish with sanding using medium followed by fine grit sandpaper. * For best results dampen the material for easier mixing and application achieving a smooth appearance of the cured compound. Remove any excess material before hardening begins to reduce excess sanding and finishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the Wood Restore Liquid Hardener before I use the putty, and in what order?

Use the Liquid Hardener first. Dig out all soft, rotted wood, brush on Wood Restore Liquid Hardener until the surface looks shiny, and let it harden 2 to 4 hours. Then knead equal parts of Part A and Part B putty and press it into the cavity. The hardener stabilizes the remaining wood fibers so the putty has something solid to bond to.

Will the cured putty hold screws, and can I use it on structural wood like joists or rafters?

No. J-B Weld rates this putty as a cosmetic repair, not a structural one, so do not rely on it to carry load or to hold structural fasteners in joists, rafters or deck framing. It will hold light fasteners such as upholstery staples and trim nails once fully cured; allow about two days before stapling into it. Replace framing that has lost strength.

How do I mix it, and how soon can I sand, drill and paint the repair?

Mix equal parts Part A and Part B, a 1:1 ratio, kneading with the spreader or gloved fingers until the color is uniform. It cures in 10 to 20 minutes. After 60 minutes you can sand, tap, machine, drill, file and paint it. Start with a medium grit sandpaper and finish with fine grit for a smooth surface.

How cold can it be outside when I make the repair?

Apply and cure it above freezing. J-B Weld's support team advises staying above 32F for the whole cure, not just at the moment you apply it, because a hard freeze part way through will stop it curing properly. Warm conditions speed the cure and cold slows it, so plan an outdoor repair for a mild, dry stretch of weather.

My repair has low spots. Can I add a second layer on top of cured putty?

Yes. Lightly sand the cured layer first so the new putty has something to key into, wipe off the dust, then mix and apply more. This is the normal way to bring low spots up flush after the first application settles. Build it up in thin passes rather than one thick one, and sand smooth after the final layer has cured.

The putty is stiff and hard to work into cracks. Can I add water to loosen it?

You can add a little water to loosen a stiff mix, but no more than 10 percent. Beyond that you risk weakening the cure. If the putty is very dry straight out of the tub or does not harden at all, the material may be past its useful life, so contact J-B Weld support rather than trying to correct it with more water.
