J-B Weld Hi-Temp Red Silicone Gasket Maker and Sealant is an RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanized) Silicone gasketing material, designed for use in mechanical assemblies where the existence of higher, continuous temperatures up 650°F. Upon curing, which occurs when the product is exposed to the moisture in air, the silicone forms a tough, waterproof seal on most surfaces. It will not shrink or crack, resists weathering, and is great for many automotive applications.

How to Use

Prepare

For best results, clean and dry surface area

Apply

Apply even, continuous ¼ inch bead of Silicone to one surface area. Surround all bolt holes with Silicone.

Assemble

Reconnect parts while Silicone is wet.

Secure

Hand tighten until Silicone begins to squeeze out.

Dry

Allow drying for 1 hour and then tighten an additional ½ turn.

Finish

Scrape or cut away excess cured sealant. Silicone will fully cure in 24 hours.

What temperature can Hi-Temp Red Silicone withstand?

It is rated for continuous service up to 550 F and intermittent exposure up to 650 F. That makes it the right pick in the J-B Weld silicone line for exhaust joints, manifolds, and other hot, dry areas. Apply it above freezing, allow one hour of set time, and give it a full 24 hours to cure before the part sees peak heat.

Is Hi-Temp Red oil resistant, or should I use a different gasket maker for oil?

It is oil resistant, but it is not the best choice where oil is the main exposure. Ultimate Black 32329 is formulated for maximum petroleum and oil resistance and is what J-B Weld recommends for oil pans, valve covers, transfer cases, and differential covers. Use the red where heat is the governing factor, such as exhaust and manifold work. For coolant joints, use Ultimate Grey or Ultimate Black.

Will Hi-Temp Red Silicone hold up to gasoline or diesel?

No. Gasoline and diesel dissolve RTV silicone regardless of color, so do not use this or any J-B Weld silicone on fuel tanks, carburetor bodies, fuel sender plates, or fuel lines. Head gaskets on gasoline engines are also outside its range. If you need a fuel-resistant seal, use a gasket material or sealer specifically rated for fuel service.

Is Hi-Temp Red sensor safe, and can I use it on aluminum engine parts?

It is sensor safe, so it will not harm oxygen sensors in normal automotive use. It is an acetoxy, or acid-cure, silicone, and for aluminum engine castings, supercharger housings, painted surfaces, and glass bonding J-B Weld points customers to Ultimate Grey 32327 instead, a neutral oxime silicone with better adhesion on aluminum. Keep the red for steel exhaust and high-heat joints.

Can I apply Hi-Temp Red on top of an existing paper or steel gasket as a dressing?

No. J-B Weld's position is that RTV silicone forms the gasket itself and is not meant to be layered onto an existing paper, cork, rubber, or steel gasket. Remove the old gasket, clean both flanges down to clean bare metal, and lay one continuous bead. If you want to keep the original gasket in place, use a product sold as a gasket dressing.

How long does Hi-Temp Red need to cure before I torque the bolts and run the engine?

Set time is one hour and full cure is 24 hours. Assemble and snug the fasteners while the bead is still fresh so it can spread, then let it skin over before final torque. J-B Weld's support team suggests waiting at least 12 hours before idling an engine, and the joint must stay oil-free and above freezing during application and cure.
