Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply it, how many coats, and how long do I wait between them?

Brush it on with a disposable brush and do not thin it. Shake the can well, then completely saturate the softened wood; for extra strength apply several coats until the surface looks shiny. Allow about 30 minutes between coats so each one has time to soak into the wood. Let the last coat harden 2 to 4 hours before you apply filler.

Can I use it before the epoxy putty or before a casting epoxy pour?

Yes, that is what it is for. It is made to seal and reinforce decayed wood before you fill it with Wood Restore Premium Epoxy Putty, and J-B Weld's support team confirms you can also use it to seal a live edge slab before pouring a two-part epoxy filler into the voids. Let it harden 2 to 4 hours before filling.

Does it make rotted wood structurally sound again?

No. It reinforces and stabilizes soft, decayed wood fibers and reduces moisture so filler will bond, but J-B Weld classes the result as a cosmetic repair rather than a structural one. It is fine on rotted areas of a cedar swing set beam or pressure treated framing, but it does not restore load-carrying strength. Replace any member that has lost structural integrity.

How much do I need for a large area like an RV subfloor?

It depends on how deep the damage goes rather than on surface area, because the liquid soaks in until the wood stops absorbing it. For a water damaged RV subfloor of roughly 100 to 150 square feet, J-B Weld's support team estimated about four 16 oz bottles. Treat that as a starting estimate and buy extra if the wood is badly decayed.

Can I use it as a clear topcoat over stain or leave it exposed to sunlight?

No. It is formulated to go under paint, not to serve as a clear finish, and it is not made for direct UV exposure, so it can flake off in sunlight. It is also not intended to go over stain. If you want a clear coat on stained outdoor furniture, use a topcoat the stain manufacturer lists as compatible with that stain.

Can I put it in a spray bottle or another container to reach deep cracks?

Yes. J-B Weld's support team confirms you can transfer it to another container, including a small spray bottle, to reach deep narrow fissures a brush cannot get into. Do not thin it first. Keep working it in until the wood stops absorbing and the surface looks shiny, then let it harden 2 to 4 hours before you fill.
